About Thistles
One Pella flower shop grew into a family of brands, all rooted in the same heritage and love of celebration.
Hi, I'm Alie
I've built this collection of brands around one idea: celebrating community. I'm proud of my heritage, and even prouder of the community I'm raising my children in — this town is home in every sense of the word. I love creating spaces that feel like home, and I'm always looking for a reason to host a celebration or bring people together.
Being part of the Thistles legacy is an honor I don't take lightly. I get to walk alongside my community — customers, neighbors, friends — through their happiest moments, their hardest ones, and all the ordinary days in between. That's not something I take for granted, and it's the reason every brand here was built the way it was.
Five brands, one family, one hometown. What ties them together isn't just that I built them — it's that each one grew out of the same values: heritage worth honoring, quality worth trusting, and a genuine love for bringing people together, whether that's around a candle-lit kitchen island, a table set with fresh tulips, or a box of chocolate truffles shared with someone you love.
Where it Started

Holland Scents Candles
I founded Holland Scents first. Over the years, I found scents that stuck with me — ones tied to specific memories, people, and moments I didn't want to let go of. Candle-making became my way to recreate them, to hold onto those memories and share them with others. Our family farm, just 12 minutes from home, keeps us close to the Iowa soy that goes into every candle we pour.
The Heart of Pella

Thistles Flower Market
Buying Thistles Flower Market, founded as the Village Florist in February 1983, was one of the most meaningful moves I've made. I grew up walking into Thistles, picking flowers out of the cooler, and having the florists help me design arrangements for the people I loved. There was something about that — finding creativity and beauty in the art of gifting flowers — that stayed with me long before I ever thought about owning the shop myself.

Pella Tulip Bulbs
From there came Pella Tulip Bulbs. We wanted to give our visitors, and our own friends and family, the chance to grow gardens with the same quality and beauty as the City of Pella's own — the same bulbs and the same Dutch supplier.
A Sweet Addition

Garden Square Chocolatier
Then came Garden Square Chocolatier. The building we reside in at Thistles has always meant something to me — when I was little, the south side of it was home to the old Soda Jerk, where my grandma Bonnie would take me whenever she visited. She'd sit at the counter with a Green River while I enjoyed a chocolate milkshake beside her, and even then, I knew I wanted to own my own business in that building one day. Being able to craft and sell our own chocolates in that very same space now is something truly special to me. We named it Garden Square after Pella's Garden Square just across the street — the original downtown park where our town has always gathered and watched the seasons change through its trees and blooms.
Bringing It All Together

Shop Thistles
And to bring it all together, we built Shop Thistles — the home for all of it online, carrying our curated gifts, home decor, and our brands to customers nationwide, not just here in Pella.
